Our History

Trinity Presbyterian Church of Plano, Texas (PCA), was started in the summer of 1985 as a church planting outreach of Spanish River Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Boca Raton, Florida. Our founding pastor, Steve Childers, and his wife, Becky, moved to Plano and began meetings with a core group of about twenty to thirty people in a conference room at a local hotel.

One hundred people attended Trinity's first official worship service in October 1985 in Clark High School's auditorium. Trinity's first eighteen months as a mission church were characterized by strong numerical growth and leadership development.

Trinity became a "particular" (official) church in the PCA on May 31, 1987, receiving its first members, electing elders, and installing Steve Childers as pastor. Later that year, Jeff Rakes joined the staff as Trinity's first assistant pastor. Jeff and his wife, Celeste, brought to our church excellence in worship and music and a heart for children's ministries.

For the next five years, the church held its worship services at Clark High School. A seventeen-acre parcel of land was purchased in 1991. In March 1992, the officers, building committee leaders, and members of Trinity participated in a ground-breaking ceremony, and construction of our building began. The church celebrated its first worship service in its new building in November of that same year.

After six years of faithful service, Jeff and Celeste Rakes took a ministry position at a church in Delaware. In the fall 1993, Dave Matthews joined the Trinity staff as our new assistant pastor, bringing with him his wife, Betty, and two daughters.

In the spring 1996, Pastor Childers accepted a full time teaching position at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida. Assistant Pastor Dave Matthews pastored the church for the next 9 months while Trinity actively sought God's will to find a new Senior Pastor. Dave Matthews accepted a call as Associate Pastor, Christian Education at Briarwood Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Birmingham, Alabama in early 1997. For several months, Trinity continued without any official Pastoral Staff in place.

Trinity called Dr. Tom Egbert as its pastor in the fall 1997. Tom and his wife, Joan, left their home and ministries with the PCA in Atlanta, Georgia to shepherd our church in Plano. Pastor Egbert officiated over his first church service at Trinity in November 1997. Dr. Egbert was the pastor at Trinity until November, 2000.

In June 2001, Trinity called a new senior pastor, John McCracken. Pastor McCracken is a graduate of Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. John is a native to the Dallas area. His wife, Mindy, is originally from Philadelphia.

Over the years, excellence in preaching and teaching from the pulpit has been an important part of Trinity's ministry. In addition, the Lord has blessed our church with many gifted and godly teachers who have taught adult Sunday School classes and filled the pulpit on occasion. Bible studies for men and women are taught on a regular basis.
